Rehersal Dinner Etiquette

What is this? How does it work?

This rehearsal dinner is a thorn in my side. I assumed it was a small dinner with the bridal party and immediate family, but my grooms parents insist they want to plan it. Now we all know I am a bit of a control freak and I hate surprises, but I think I have been pretty good with sharing the wedding details and tasks. For some reason I am not willing to give up the reigns of the Rehearsal Dinner.

Richard and I both want a casual dinner at Chaps. Our favorite restaurant and a running joke, because this restaurant was Richard's first choice for venue. They have amazing wings and it is in the middle of our house and the venue.

When we mentioned this thought my future Mother-in-law seemed offended and quickly said 'I don't want you guys to worry about the Rehearsal Party' PARTY?! No. I don't want a party the night before the wedding. I don't want a guest list or a seating plan, but I don't know where the etiquette falls.

Is this a traditional thing that I should just bite my tongue and let happen or is it worth the fight to have an intimate dinner with the people that matter most???

I am plagued with this. Now I think the main reason my in-laws want this event is because they want to plan something and since most of the wedding has been planned in private, they are hoping to snag this event and have it done just the way they want, despite our requests.

I guess the real question is how much is giving in and how much is overdoing it?? A lot of the wedding related ideas have been compromised, sacrificed and not my first pick... although I am incredibly excited about every detail... is it ok that I am done compromising?

Not sure... Please help, I would love any advice on this topic. I want a simple dinner... can I just have a simple dinner the night before MY wedding?!

Oh yea... and this dinner will be the last moments I spend with Richard before the wedding... after the final toast we head to separate quarters to prepare for the BIG day... 285 days.

Whewf!
Love!
